Contacts

Contacts are the notification methods Rotadeck uses to reach you when you're on-call.

What is a Contact?

A contact is a specific notification channel:

  • Email: Receive alerts via email
  • SMS: Get text messages for urgent alerts
  • Slack Webhook: Direct messages in Slack

You can have multiple contacts of each type.

Adding a Contact

  1. Navigate to Contacts from the sidebar
  2. Click Add Contact
  3. Choose the contact type
  4. Enter the required information in Destination:
    • Email: Your email address
    • SMS: Your phone number (with country code)
    • Slack Webhook: Your Slack webhook URL

Contact Validation

Some contact types require validation:

Email Validation

  1. After adding an email contact, check your inbox
  2. Click the verification link
  3. Contact status changes to "Validated"

SMS Validation

  1. After adding a phone number, you'll receive a code
  2. Enter the code in Rotadeck
  3. Contact status changes to "Validated"

Slack Validation

Slack contacts are verified automatically when properly configured by sending a test message to slack.

Validating a Contact

  1. Navigate to Contacts from the sidebar
  2. Select the contact you wish to validate
  3. Select Validate in the action bar at the bottom
  4. Enter the validation code you received in the box
  5. Click Validate

The contact should now be Enabled and Validated

Requesting Contact Revalidation

If you missed the message or email to validate a contact:

  1. Navigate to Contacts from the sidebar
  2. Select the contact you wish to revalidate
  3. Select Resend Validation in the action bar at the bottom
  4. Confirm

Contact Status

Each contact has a status:

  • Pending Validation: Waiting for you to verify
  • Validated: Ready to receive alerts

Managing Your Contacts

Viewing Contacts

Your contacts list shows:

  • Contact method and destination
  • Validation status

Deleting Contacts

To remove a contact:

  1. Select the contact
  2. Click Delete
  3. Confirm deletion

Default Contacts

You must have 1 valid contact, the platform will not let you delete the default contact.

Warning: You won't receive alerts through deleted contacts, even if you're on-call.

Best Practices

  • Multiple methods: Set up both email and SMS for reliability
  • Verify immediately: Don't wait—verify contacts right away
  • Keep updated: Update phone numbers and emails when they change
  • Test notifications: Use the test feature to ensure delivery

Notification Delivery

When you're on-call and an alert comes in:

  1. Rotadeck checks your enabled contacts
  2. Sends the alert through ALL enabled channels

Slack Notifications

Slack notifications include:

  • Alert title and description
  • Severity and integration source
  • Direct link to alert in Rotadeck
  • Quick action buttons (Acknowledge/Resolve)

Email Notifications

Email alerts include:

  • Full alert details
  • Link to view in Rotadeck
  • Integration and schedule information

SMS Notifications

SMS messages are concise:

  • Alert title
  • Severity
  • Link to full details

Troubleshooting

Not Receiving Notifications?

  1. Check contact status: Must be "Validated" and "Enabled"
  2. Verify you're on-call: Check rotation and schedule
  3. Check spam folder: Email alerts might be filtered
  4. Verify phone number: Ensure correct country code and format

Verification Not Working?

  • Email: Check spam, wait a few minutes, request resend
  • SMS: Ensure phone has signal, try resending code
  • Contact support: If issues persist, reach out to support@rotadeck.com
